Milo Imagines the World
A few years ago, Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson paired up to create Last Stop on Market Street which went on to win a Newbery Medal, a rarity for a picture book. They joined forces a second time with Carmela Full of Wishes. Now, they've collaborated yet again on another gorgeous book.
Milo Imagines the World follows Milo as he and his sister are on a long train ride. As they ride, Milo notices the other people on the train. In his notebook, he imagines what their life might be like once they leave the train. He imagines a woman in a wedding dress getting married, dancers who perform on the train followed as if they are up to no good, a boy in a suit who lives in a castle. Then it is Milo's turn to get off and he realizes, as the boy gets off at the same stop, that the stories he imagines might not be true at all.
I love that all three books by de la Peña and Robinson include a cast of characters from different backgrounds. When we lived in Boston and took public transportation all the time, this is what life was like for us. I loved that Oscar was able to see people from all walks of life, that we all had this shared experience. When we feel safe being on public transportation again, we will definitely start riding the train here in Buffalo.(Disclosure: I am an affiliate of Bookshop.org and I will earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.)
