Capture the Gold
January, in the children's book world, is awards season. The American Library Association meets on the 3rd Monday to announce its Youth Media Awards. You may have heard of the big ones: The Newbery, The Caldecott, the Coretta Scott King. There's a slew of other amazing awards, highlighting some of the best books from the previous year.
Here are the nominees for the AEAB Awards for Best Picture Book. |
It's also a time when folks in the children's book world make their predictions about what might win the next award. The process for determining who gets the gold award vs the honor/silver awards is a bit complicated so we'll hold off on that for now. But if you are curious about who other book bloggers think will take home the awards, here are some of my favorites to follow!
Travis Jonker, who taught me all about "Undies", predicts his winners for Caldecott (illustrations).
Mr. Schu and Colby Sharp and their Mock Caldecott.
Anderson's Bookshop also does a mock Newbery (best in children's lit.)
Heavy Medal is an entire blog dedicated to Mock Newbery awards, from the School Library Journal.
And the Horn Book has an entire blog dedicated to Calling Caldecott.
And don't forget, you can vote in our own awards for the first annual Alice, Ever After Book Awards, right here! (Note: You DON'T have to be in Buffalo and these books were not all new releases this past year. We may change that next year but this year we decided to hear what the people have to say!)
And on January 24, at 8 am east coast time, you can watch LIVE here!
