Stripes and Bumps
There is nothing more comforting than a good book. On those days when you are feeling blue, under the weather, or you wish you had some company, a book can make everything better.
Yesterday, I hit my head at school...pretty darn hard. Actually, hard enough that I had to go home, have someone stay with me and monitor me, and then eventually deliver me to the emergency room. After being poked, prodded, and cat-scanned, I came back home.
Due to all this drama, I missed some fabulous seats at a musical last night and I am currently at home missing our school's annual faculty party. What is a girl to do? That's right, I have been snuggled up with some good books, some knitting projects, and a bunch of good movies. (Of course, this is all because I got the go ahead from my doctor that these were ok for me to do!)
I'm reading a new book, The Sixty-Eight Rooms by Marianne Malone. This book takes place in the famous Thorne Rooms in the Chicago Art Institute. Ruthie and her best friend Jack find a key that lets them into some secret rooms in the museum. I'll let you know how it goes!
In the meantime, here is one of my favorite "being sick" books. In this book, A Bad Case of the Stripes, by David Shannon, Camilla Cream loves lima beans but won't eat them because she wants to fit in with her friends. In fact she wants to fit in so bad, that she wakes up one morning, tries to pick an outfit that will please her friends, and stripes cover her entire body. When she heads to school, she quickly changes shades to please all her friends. The message is pretty clear, it is much better to be yourself. With David Shannon you are guaranteed pictures to make you giggle, and this book delivers.
Tonight, whether you have the bumps, the mumps, the stripes, or you are just feeling glum, pick up a good book and enjoy your escape!
