May I Pick Your Brain?
When I first joined the world of Twitter, my sister advised me that I should follow Brain Picker. Boy, was she ever right! Maria Popova, who writes the website Brain Pickings as well, is the genius behind this amazing wealth of information. Think Wikipedia for the creative soul. I retweet and repost her stuff so often that I feel like she could be the one and only source of the new thing I learn every day.
Two of my favorite posts of hers include her book spine poetry and her Literary Jukebox posts. The book spine poetry involves making combinations of books so that the titles on the spines create a poem. (Seems a little self-explanatory, I know.) The Literary Jukebox combines a quote from a book and a song that matches the theme of the quote. Now you see why I follow her!
Tonight, as I was making a comfy, cozy dinner on our rainy LA night, I felt inspired to try my hand at both of these.
For your Children's Lit Jukebox, I offer not a quote but a book and a song. Tonight's book is The House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne. Since Pooh is known for being a little simple and a whole lotta love, I felt like "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd really captured his hold-hands-with-a-pig nature.
"Ohh take your time... Don't live too fast, troubles will come, and they will pass." - Lynyrd Skynyrd
"...It's the best way to write poetry, letting things come.”- Pooh
See what I mean?
Here is my attempt at the book spine poetry. The books involved are: Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff, Zoom by Istvan Banyai, Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, and In the Spin of Things by Rebecca Kai Dotlich.
What about you? Any inspiration?
