On The Fourth Day of Christmas: Books About Elephants
On the fourth day of Christmas, let's read some fabulous books about ELEPHANTS!!
Another great find at the American Library Conference this summer was the Pomelo series by Ramona Badescu and Benjamin Chaud. I was a little put out that this particular publisher would only sell their books to librarians and not a nerdy children's book superfan who was clearly crashing the conference with a small child in tow (not great for standing in long lines to meet authors, but wonderful for the stroller cargo space for collecting books!), so I had to wait until I got home to order the set.
These books all feature Pomelo the Garden Elephant (about the same size as a snail), and cover some very familiar topics in children's picture books- opposites, colors, and growing. Haven't we had enough of these topics, you might be saying, but wait! These books are not your ordinary first concepts books. Badescu and Chaud both have a zany sense of humor that definitely comes through in the pictures. Most are funny, but some are quite poignant. For some reason, these books are hard to find at bookstores so you might want to call your local bookstore in advance to make sure they have it in stock.
The first- a peek at Pomelo Begins to Grow:
...and my very favorite one, Pomelo's Opposites:
As I was looking these books up to share the links with you, I saw that there is a new Pomelo book coming out soon! Hooray!
The other elephant book for today is Elefante by Vanita Oelschlager, illustrated by Kristin Blackwood. We happen to have the Spanish language edition but it is also available in English.

This is a lovely board book about an elephant that forgets that elephants are not supposed to forget. Some of the things that happen are sad (he forgets to kiss his mother goodbye at school and she's sad all day) but some are happy (he forgets that he is afraid of mice, and makes a new friend). With only a handful of pages, it can be hard to find a board book with a truly original story, so this is a great find!
