On The Third Day of Christmas: Books About Penguins!
Happy Third Day of Christmas!
'Tis the season for PENGUINS!!
I'm excited to be joining Meg again for the 12 days of Christmas book recommendations for 2013! I'll be reviewing picture books (my favorite!) for the younger set, although I think all ages would like these books about penguins!
Jumping Penguins by Marije Tolman
I picked up this book at this past summer's ALA (American Library Association) conference in Chicago. For a book lover, this is an extremely exciting event- a huge convention center filled with dozens and dozens of stands featuring publishers, authors, and illustrators, all showing, selling, signing, and sometimes even giving away the newest books, including books that haven't even been published yet! If you ever get the chance, GO! This publisher (Lemniscaat) had a stand and it was very difficult to decide which book to buy... and I had to choose only one because I had already stuffed my suitcase with about 100 pounds of books. I chose this one for the absolutely beautiful illustrations:
the cover of "Jumping Penguins"
from "Jumping Penguins"
The text is not for the faint of heart, but great for people interested in weird animal facts- did you know that a giant octopus can get through a hole as large as his mouth? Or that if you put alcohol on a scorpion it will go berserk and sting itself to death? Eek!
Penguin by Polly Dunbar
Ben has a penguin that won't laugh at his jokes or play with him, so he decides to bother him until he gets a reaction. I thought this book was hilarious but *spoiler alert* if you don't like books where little kids that annoy small animals possibly get eaten by a lion, maybe this book is not for you.
Penguin and Pinecone by Salina Yoon
This is a love story about a penguin and a pinecone- what could be cuter, people? Oh wait, maybe that he loves the pinecone so much that he knits it a matching scarf? Yes, please!
Penguin's Hidden Talent by Alex Latimer
You might recognize this author from other great picture books (some reviewed here, in this very blog!), including The Boy Who Cried Ninja and Lion Versus Rabbit.
I love Alex Latimer's clean illustration style and sharp sense of humor. This book features a cameo of the king of Norway giving a motivational speech, appliance-juggling bears, and a rabbit that can retrieve himself out of his own hat. Each time I read this, my heart goes out to Penguin as he tries and tries to figure out what his hidden talent might be.
I'm really looking forward to Alex Latimer's upcoming illustrations for the newest version of Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories" to be published sometime in 2014! Stay tuned!
