Day 1, Something is Missing...
My grandiose plans of reviving the 12 days of book gift ideas totally failed this year. I don't know why because I had some ideas and actually drafted the blog entries but it just sorta slipped away. So, I'll hit you with what I have. Eight days of holiday gift ideas! Here we go!
Wordless books have been popular for awhile. I love reading them with kids and students because they can tell their own story and everyone has their own version. (Not to mention the great inferencing skills you can build...c'mon I'm a teacher after all...)
Today I bring to you three wordless books and one...picture-less book! These are some of my fave's from the year that will be sure to find a place in any home.
Journey by Aaron Becker
Remember how The Purple Crayon opened up the possibility of a world within one singular drawing tool? Well, Journey takes it one step farther. A girl draws a door on her wall and opens up a world of possibility. It is no wonder this won the Caldecott. Check out Quest for a beautiful sequel.
The Farmer and the Clown by Marla Frazee
What happens when a little clown bounces off a train full of clowns and into the world of a farmer? A unique and unexpected friendship. Marla Frazee never ceases to amaze me. Love, love, love this story.
Flashlight by Lizi Boyd
The outside world doesn't seem so scary when you have a trusty flashlight to guide your way. Join the main character in this beautiful story as he wanders through the night unlocking all the secrets hidden in the dark...and realizes it ain't so bad after all.
This Book Has No Pictures by B.J. Novak
Any reader who has loved Mo Willems and his pigeon, or Mac Barnett's Chloe and the Lion, will love this book with no pictures. The narrator speaks directly to the audience, showing that he truly has control of the story. Why would you need pictures when you have the power of the word? Sure to make every reader giggle when they realize the secret power, and potential silliness, of words...with no pictures.
