Books with a Soundtrack...Charlie Parker Played BeBop
There are a few book fairies in my life - people who send me random books and/or suggestions without the need for a holiday or birthday. One recent book fairy sent us a copy of Charlie Parker Played be bop by Chris Raschka. Obviously it was an immediate hit with Oscar.
The book reads like you might hear be bop and it is hard not to "sing" it as you read. The rhythm, the rhymes, they make it feel as if you are reading a Charlie Parker song. This book is a clear book that needs a soundtrack. I tried to find a video of Charlie Parker playing and it proved a challenge. This article explains why! Oscar and I listened to the classic, "Summertime" and a few others. Here is a link for a bio on Charlie Parker and how he helped invent bebop. Have a read, take a listen. Bonus: I found a group that performed this book to the tune of "A Night in Tunisia" Really cool!
