Representation Matters
At Oscar's most recent wellness checkup, his doctor gave him a new book. This has been pretty standard since he started going to the doctor. This most recent book was by far superior to the rest. I actually really love this book! The premise seems pretty basic. It is a board book that shows all the different things doctors do and how kids can be a doctor too.
Here is what I really love, and what I am hoping the future of children's literature looks more and more like. This article talks about the importance of balancing books that tackle big issues and identity with books that offer love, laugh, and wonder. Then it continues to say,
"These are important things that our black and brown children must learn—but they must also learn the pleasure of reading a story in the relaxed, quiet moments before bed, reading not to learn but to feel safe, feel loved, laugh, wonder. That’s a fundamental privilege of childhood and should not be reserved for only one set of children."
This is what I love about the book Future Doctor. There is representation of so many different kinds of adults and children. And not in a way that feels like you should be learning a lesson. It is in a way that says, "this is just what it looks like in real life." So many children reading this book will know the privilege of the pleasure of reading, to feel safe and to feel loved. And to feel wonder. If you are looking for a board book for your little one, or a gift for a little one, this one is perfect.
