Eyes that Kiss in the Corners
Note: I scheduled this blog post last week before the horrendous hate crime that killed 8 people, 6 who were AAPO. I wanted to add a reminder that by reading to your child and choosing books with different representations of people, you are also helping to #StopAsianHate. Ok, now read on below.
This year, so many books have come out that act as mirrors and windows for kids. One that I especially love is Eyes that Kiss in the Corners by Joanna Ho, illustrated by Dung Ho. This book celebrates what makes one girl and her family special. A young Asian girl notices that her eyes are different than the other kids in school. Her eyes kiss in the corners. They glow like warm tea. The book is beautifully filled with other comparisons and illustrations that highlight her story and her connection to her mom, her grandmother, her sister, and her culture. Here's another review I read that I thought captured the importance of reading about characters who look like you.
I thought I had taken more pictures of this book but when I went to post, they weren't there. Mom brain? If you want to see more just check out the post linked above. Better yet, head on over to your local indie bookstore and buy it! (Or hop on Bookshop.org to support all local bookstores!)
