We are Water Protectors
Golde, in the same interview, talks about how she prefers to use watercolor and when she was presented with the text for We are the Water Protectors it was the perfect match for her.
So here's why you should read this with your kids. This is a book written and illustrated by two women who are enrolled members of Native tribes. As Lindstrome pointes out in the interview, book publishers weren't always interested in publishing books about experiences of Native people. The fact that this was not only published but also won the Caldecott is phenomenal. As you start to diversify the stories on your shelves, it is worth considering what titles you have the represent a variety of people. (I'll help you start building that collection!)
Chances are, your little one, or not so little one, will also be inspired to protect the natural resources that keep us alive after reading this book. It's a great way to start a conversation at home or in a classroom.
