1...Open! Shout out to Oscar for helping! |
Folks...I OWN MY OWN CHILDREN'S BOOKSTORE! The past month, as evidenced by the serious lack of blog posts, has been out of this world. We wrapped up the design of the space, we whirred up the old Square point of sale, we toasted with champagne and sparkling apple cider. And WE did it!
|
I love seeing strollers in front of the shop! |
|
Jessie, walking balloons to the shop for the grand opening. |
|
Fairy Cakes, my neighbor, made some bookish cookies. YUM! |
|
A little peek into the shop. A sweet 800 square feet. |
Yes, I said we. And I've decided I will always say we. While *I* may be the sole owner of this dreamy little space, there has not been a step in the process that *I* have done alone. The night before the Grand Opening we threw a celebration at the shop for friends and family who have helped along the way. It didn't even cover half of the folks who helped. I cried my way through a toast, trying to capture in at least one small way the level of gratitude I have for making this a reality.
Over the past week that I've been open the dream, my dream, has expanded. It now includes a group of people I wasn't even ready to imagine. The people here in Buffalo have become more than a dream come true. (Fun fact, my son just woke up and I can hear him singing "Shout!" in bed.) I've loved every second of getting to know my neighbors who pop in every day. My delivery folks, Alex, Anthony, and Rob, stop in to say hi and Rob even made it to the grand opening. JoAnn and Debbie walk the neighbhorhood every morning and check in to see how it's going. They even brought me flowers for the grand opening. I love hearing their stories, helping folks find new books. Once I thought I might want to be a bar tender because I love to listen to people's stories. I feel like this has been the perfect mix of that and talking about books. I've had just a couple of hiccups - a sign permit that wasn't ready in time for the grand opening and gift cards that are beyond delayed. One neighbor, who has been patiently waiting for the gift cards, has been more than gracious with the delay. Sending a special thank you her way.
I've missed writing on the blog so hopefully I'll find a way to add that to the routine again. For those of you new to the blog, welcome! Here you will find mostly book stuff but every once in a while some adventures and check ins. Every year I come up with a new year's resolution, and sometimes a few smaller goals, and keep myself accountable by checking in. Here is my monthly update on the goals. Thanks for reading!

My mom got me this sweet button for Dance Party Friday. So far it has been a hit! |

Some books watching it rain. |
The Big One - Stop biting my nails.
Made it through the Grand Opening and first week of business without biting! I am 7 months in so feeling pretty great about this!
The Other Goals
1. Read a novel written in Spanish. Nope, but I did buy some books in Spanish for the store!
2. Learn how to roller skate...again. No. But I did buy roller skate pins for the shop, ha! And I checked my local buy nothing group for free skates.
3. Stop dying my hair. Still great! In exciting news I even have one wild and crazy grey that loves to boing out of the top of my head. I feel so lucky!
4. Learn how to use power tools. I haven't used much more than a drill. I got my hands on a nail gun for a hot second but I could do better on this one.
5. Join a writing group. I'm happy to say this is still going really great! We swap stories once a month to critique and last week we had a zoom meeting. This group brings me life.
6. Learn to play "Blackbird" on the guitar. Nope. Wah. Wah.
YES!!!!!! Check that sucker off the list. I love going to "work" every day. Every. Day. It's been awhile since I could say that so I'll ride the wave as long as it lasts.
I'm still one month behind on my Reese Witherspoon book club books but I'm reading a book a month which isn't too shabby. My BF got me a subscription to the Atlantic so I've been trying to read that while I wait for new books to come in to the library. Just picked up my June book yesterday and already finished 50-ish pages. Woot!
