On the Second Day of Christmas
It is the Second Day of Books and it also happens to be Dance Friday! I thought I would honor both traditions by bringing you some hip hop books! Your little b-boy and b-girl will do back flips for the coolest kid lit on the block.
When the Beat Was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop by Laban Carrik Hill
For your young hip-hopper who thinks that Kanye is what hip hop is all about, this is the book for you. I discovered this book last year when I was working with a student who told me he loved hip hop. He continued to rattle off his favorite rappers and they were of the quality that you might expect. I told him I would teach him a bit of the history of hip hop. A quick Google search told me that a new children's book would be published about the creator of hip hop, the one and only DJ Kool Herc. Fast forward to August of 2013. This book tells Herc's story, how hip hop was born, and will give your reader a real connection to real hip hop, fo' real. I brought this to school and didn't see it for a full two months! The kids were thrilled to read about hip hop...at school!
Hip Hop Board Book by Mander
Even your youngest reader can develop a taste for Public Enemy, graffiti, poppers and lockers. Manders teaches the basics in this board book, however the background is filled with all the best parts of hip hop culture. Your baby will be the baddest breaker in town!
Hip Hop Dog by Chris Raschka, illustrated by Vladimir Radusnky
"Can dogs rap? Of course they can. We've all seen them throwing it down, tossing it up, hounding, pointing, beagling, and boxing in our back streets and front parks." From this introduction to Hip Hop Dog, your hippest little one will be ready to rhyme. The unwanted dog in a litter of 16 is the saddest and baddest in town but one day he discovers music and his life is changed. This a story that is certainly shared with the most important hip hop stars today and will inspire your budding rapper to find his or her inner rhythm.
Want more hip hop? Check out these other two hip hop books I've reviewed in the past!
Hip and Hop Don't Stop by Jef Czekaj
Hip Hop Speaks to Children, edited by Nikki Giovanni
And here is a little dance video for y'all!
